How to choose senior photo locations in Lawrence, KS

Before the list, here’s the easiest way to pick locations without spiraling.

Ask yourself:

• Are you more into nature, city, or a mix?

• Would you rather keep it simple or fit in as many looks as you can?

Most seniors get to 3 to 4 locations in one session. That gives you plenty of variety without rushing.

1. Mass Street (Downtown Lawrence)

Why it works

Mass St is iconic. Brick, murals, storefronts, alleyways, and that downtown energy.

Best time to shoot

Late afternoon into golden hour for warm light.

Outfit ideas

Denim, boots, layers, a statement jacket, or a dressier second look. Guys: dark denim with a jean or bomber jacket, or a button-down with the sleeves rolled.

Notes

I always pick quieter corners so you get clean backgrounds without random strangers in your photos.

---

2. KU Campus (University of Kansas)

Why it works

KU is timeless. Architecture, steps, stone, trees, and a classic look that never gets old.

Best time to shoot

Golden hour is the sweet spot.

Outfit ideas

Classic and clean, KU gear, or something elevated and polished. Guys: a crisp button-down or quarter-zip with chinos, or a KU hoodie for a casual look.

Notes

Some areas can be busier during the school year, so timing matters. If your session includes KU’s campus, check the campus guidelines ahead of time.

---

3. Baker Wetlands

Why it works

Dreamy greens, boardwalks, tall grasses, and soft natural light. This is one of my favorite nature spots.

Best time to shoot

Late afternoon into early evening.

Outfit ideas

Earth tones, soft pastels, boots, textures. Guys: olive, tan, or cream tees and henleys, a flannel, and boots.

Notes

Sessions stay on marked paths because it’s protected land.

---

4. Clinton Lake Park

Why it works

Water reflections, open sky, tall grass, and that “sunset looks like a movie” vibe.

Best time to shoot

Sunset. Always sunset.

Outfit ideas

Flowy dress, neutrals, or bold color that pops. Guys: a short-sleeve or linen button-up, or a solid tee in a rich color.

Notes

Bring bug spray. Kansas mosquitoes are not emotionally supportive.

---

5. Lawrence Arboretum

Why it works

Clean paths, trees, water, and lots of variety in a small area. It’s soft and classic without being boring.

Best time to shoot

Late afternoon, especially close to golden hour.

Outfit ideas

Whites, soft neutrals, cozy layers, boots. Guys: a white or cream tee, a knit sweater, or a light jacket over a henley.

Notes

Great choice if you want nature without tall grass everywhere.

---

6. Downtown alleys + side streets (near Mass)

Why it works

If you want editorial vibes, this is it. Clean brick, metal stairs, textured walls, and killer light.

Best time to shoot

Late afternoon for directional light.

Outfit ideas

Edgy looks, monochrome, leather jacket, boots, statement accessories. Guys: a black tee with a leather or denim jacket and clean sneakers or boots.

Notes

This is the spot when you want “cool” without trying too hard.

---

7. River trails + bridge spots

Why it works

Movement, leading lines, and a more candid feel. Great for seniors who want photos that feel active and real.

Best time to shoot

Late afternoon into golden hour.

Outfit ideas

Casual layers, sneakers, movement-friendly outfits. Guys: jeans or joggers with a hoodie or quarter-zip.

Notes

Perfect add-on if you want variety without changing the whole plan.

---

8. Open greenspaces (simple and timeless)

Why it works

Sometimes simple is best. Clean backgrounds = your face and expression are the focus.

Best time to shoot

Late afternoon, once the harsh overhead light softens.

Outfit ideas

White top + denim, soft textures, classic basics. Guys: a plain tee or henley with dark jeans.

Notes

This is the spot for “I want timeless.”

---

9. Murals and colorful walls

Why it works

Color, personality, and fun. Great for seniors who want bold backdrops that match their style.

Best time to shoot

Late afternoon.

Outfit ideas

Street style, vintage, pops of color, statement shoes. Guys: a solid tee in a bold color, a letter jacket, and fresh sneakers.

Notes

Near businesses, I keep it respectful and quick.

---

10. Sunset fields and overlook spots

Why it works

Glow, silhouettes, and that dramatic sky. This is the perfect session ending.

Best time to shoot

The last 30 minutes before sunset through golden hour.

Outfit ideas

Flowy fabric, bold color, clean silhouette. Guys: a fitted solid tee or an open button-up that catches the breeze.

Notes

This is one of the easiest ways to get “wow” images.
