What If I’m Awkward in Front of the Camera? Your Lawrence, KS Senior Session, Fully Guided

Here is the thing almost no high school senior says out loud: You want amazing, magazine-worthy senior pictures, but the thought of feeling awkward in front of the camera makes you want to disappear.

Maybe you don’t know what to do with your hands. Maybe you’re worried your smile will look forced, or you’ve convinced yourself that you are just not “photogenic” and that your photos will prove it.

As a Lawrence, KS senior photographer, I hear this from almost every single high school senior I work with. Whether they go to Lawrence High, Free State, or travel in from surrounding Douglas County. If this is you, I want you to know one thing before you talk yourself out of booking your session:

You are not awkward. You have just never been guided.

Quick Answer: Feeling awkward in front of the camera is normal, and it is not a flaw. At Megan Bowers Photography in Lawrence, KS, every senior session is fully guided. You get direction for every pose, where to put your hands, and where to look. Professional hair and makeup is included for every senior. Most seniors loosen up during their first outfit.

The Real Reason You Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera

When someone hands you a camera, points it at your face, and says, “Okay, just do something natural,” of course you freeze. It is a completely normal reaction.

Nobody knows how to react to that kind of pressure. It’s like being asked to dance with no music, no rhythm, and no steps to follow. Feeling awkward in front of the camera isn’t a flaw in you. It is simply what happens when you have to figure it out all alone.

That is the biggest misconception about senior photos in Kansas. People assume you have to show up already knowing how to pose, already comfortable, and already confident.

You don’t. That is my job, not yours.

How a Fully Guided Lawrence, KS Senior Session Works

From the moment your session starts, whether we are shooting near the rustic backdrops of Clinton Lake, the vibrant alleyways of Downtown Lawrence on Mass Street, or the beautiful, classic architecture around the KU campus, you will never be left guessing what to do.

Here is exactly how I keep your session stress-free and fun:

1. Zero Guesswork Posing I tell you exactly where to put your feet, what to do with your hands, where to look, and when to laugh. I don’t just shout instructions; I will show you the pose first, and then let you copy it. If a pose feels weird or unnatural to you, we change it immediately. You don’t have to perform; you just have to follow along.

2. Easy Conversation, Real Vibe We talk, laugh, and catch up while we shoot. You will never be standing in awkward silence wondering if things are going badly.

3. Capturing the “In-Between” Moments Because I am shooting constantly, the photos that usually end up being your absolute favorites are the ones that happen in the split seconds between poses. Right after a genuine laugh, or right before you settle into a look. You won’t even notice me taking them.

4. A Built-In Warm-Up We move through a few different outfits and local Lawrence backdrops, which serves as a natural warm-up. Your first outfit is all about loosening up and getting used to the camera. By the second outfit, you’ve found your footing. By your final look, you’ll completely forget you were ever nervous. Start planning those looks with these senior picture outfit ideas.

“But I’m Honestly Just Not Photogenic…”

Let’s gently push back on that belief. Being photogenic is not an elusive personality trait that you are either born with or you aren’t.

Great portraits are the result of three simple things: flattering light, great angles, and a photographer behind the lens who knows how to direct you. I handle all three of those variables for you.

For Every Senior: Your experience begins with professional hair and makeup. Walking into your shoot feeling pampered and polished changes your entire posture and boosts your confidence before we even pick up the camera. (To see how this elevates your session, check out: Why Hair and Makeup Is Included in Your Senior Session).

What I See Every Time: The seniors who tell me up front, “I always hate photos of myself,” are almost always the ones who scream with excitement when they see their final gallery. It’s not because we changed who they are; it’s because, for the first time, someone actually showed them how to be themselves in front of a camera.

What Happens When You Stop Feeling Awkward in Front of the Camera

Somewhere in the middle of your shoot, a shift happens. You stop thinking about your hands. The fun just takes over. You catch yourself laughing for real instead of on command.

That breakthrough moment is the entire point of what I do. It happens at almost every single session, even with the seniors who walked in feeling the most awkward in front of the camera. You will leave your session feeling confident, relaxed, and a little surprised by how easy and fun it actually was.

You send outfit photos ahead of time, and I give feedback. Sessions run up to 3 hours, so there’s never a rush and plenty of time to shake off nerves.

Do I need prior modeling or camera experience?

Not at all. At Megan Bowers Photography in Lawrence, KS, most seniors have never had a professional photo session before. That’s exactly why every session is fully guided. I show you each pose, adjust the small details, and keep things light. Most seniors settle in during their first outfit and start having fun.
